LOSS OF A
BIG STAR!

The Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum joins with fellow Memphians and the global music industry in mourning the death of legendary musician Alex Chilton. Chilton was frontman for the 1960's Memphis group The Box Tops and the iconic 1970's group Big Star. He passed away on March 17 in a New orleans hospital. Throughout the decade of the 60's Chilton and The Box Tops recorded hits like "The Letter" and "Cry Like a Baby" from Memphis' American Sound Studios. Following a brief solo career, he returned to Memphis to join with Jody Stephens, Chris Bell and Andy Hummel to form Big Star, recording out of Memphis' Ardent Studios and influencing a new generation of rock and alternative bands. Chilton and Big Star were scheduled to reunite to open the Spring 2010 concert season at the Levitt Shell in Memphis' midtown Overton Park.
